About the book
The Apocalypse of Jacob follows the younger twin from his rivalry with Esau and the contested blessing into exile. His journey takes him to Bethel and then to Laban’s household, where his marriages to Leah and Rachel, his children and years of service form a new family history.
Leaving Haran means facing the brother he has wronged. On the way to that encounter, Jacob wrestles through the night with a mysterious stranger at the ford of the Jabbok. He emerges wounded and receives the name Israel. The story continues beyond that night through reconciliation, bereavement, the fate of Joseph and the family’s journey into Egypt.
The opening essay, “Of Course, Apocalypse”, places revelation and the literary form of apocalypse at the centre of the book’s approach. Dreams, encounters and changes of identity connect Jacob’s family story with questions of what is revealed and how it is understood. A closing appendix explains terms and references.
