About the book

The History of Abraham follows the first patriarch from the world he leaves behind into Canaan and Egypt. The war of the nine kings, his separation from Lot, and the covenant marked by a smoking furnace place his promise of a future within a life of danger and uncertainty.

Within the household, the story turns to Sarah, Hagar and Ishmael, the long wait for a son, and the birth of Isaac. The binding of Isaac on Mount Moriah brings the demands of the divine call into conflict with the son through whom the promise is to be fulfilled. The narrative also follows Sarah’s death, Isaac’s marriage to Rebekah and Abraham’s final years.

The opening essay, “Of Course, History”, considers how this ancient story can be told anew, engaging with Umberto Eco and the relationship between faith, language and narrative. An appendix explains terms and references encountered in the book.
